I remember being in high school and dreaming, wishing that I could sail the Greek Isles. At the time I thought to myself, there is no way. I will never be able to do that. I will never be able to afford that.
Needless to say, I was definitely shocked when ten or fifteen years later I found myself flying into Athens from JFK to go on a cruise ship around the Greek Isles with my father. It was the first trip he had taken since my mother had to stop traveling due to what we would later learn was her bout with Alzheimer’s.
It is true that my vision of sailing the Greek Isles, enjoying the beaches, etc. was very different than my reality so at first I needed to do an attitude adjustment. However, what an amazing journey I had when I was willing to let go of my preconceived ideas and be open to what was.
Each island we visited, we took a tour of the “ruins”, learned of the history, and for the first time, history became alive for me.
Even then dad was hard of hearing, so with each tour group I would listen and then repeat to my dad a summary of what was said. It was funny, I began getting a big group of people who had been in the back of the group to circle around me listening to my summary of the fun facts about the place we were visiting.
So I learned, Dream Big. You never know when you dreams might become reality!
